In 2008, Scottish trance producer Allan Cowie followed his changing tastes in music and decided to turn his attention to drum & bass. Ingratiating himself in the scene effortlessly, his first release Ambient Traveller on the now defunct Covert Operations label set the wheels in motion for a rollercoaster ride from obscurity to the success he enjoys today as LM1. With a plethora of releases on multiple formats, collaborations and the growth of his own digital label Offworld Recordings firmly establishing LM1 as a producer and label manager to watch, LM1 now takes the next logical step for both himself and Offworld with a physical CD album release. Enter Redshift.

Showcasing just how far LM1 has come in a short space of time as an artist in drum & bass, Redshift is an album which takes in so many influences it seems almost impossible that it isn't from a seasoned veteran of the scene. The opening title track Redshift is packed with atmosphere, a catchy hook and deep basslines, set over an intricate beat pattern to set the tone for an immensely varied package of tracks. Esuna is next with an upbeat two-step vibe before Amaranthine showcases some of LM1's excellent drum work over lush pads and vocal samples. Berlin follows with a blissful lesson in how minimal and atmospheric styles can compliment one another, before Morning Solace calms proceedings further with it's relaxing spacey delights. Earth Tones sees LM1 collaborate with Glen E.Ston on a track which builds and builds from the ambient opening, adding beats and FX throughout before the smooth conclusion, while Cold Blue introduces deeply atmospheric dubstep to the mix, breaking things up nicely and showcasing a combination of styles seldom heard, yet fitting the album perfectly. Return to the Source explores some old school vibes with winding basslines, leading into the stunning Changing my Consciousness, offering a wonderfully catchy upbeat hook to go with stabbing two step beats aiming this one squarely at the dancefloor. Potential unveils a darker, moodier vibe to the album leading into the heavy sub-fuelled sounds of Unbreakable. One of the highlights of the album serves as the penultimate track Evolver, a driving slice of dancefloor with an almost urgent bassline and beats which build into the ridiculously catchy yet simple melody which will imprint itself in your head from the first listen. Destiny serves as the final effort, with another top drawer serving of club-oriented drum & bass laden with the trance influences LM1 has become synonymous with.

As a whole, this is an album which will satisfy the home listener and the dancefloor equally, with tracks a DJ will return to time and time again after that first play. The joys within Redshift are wide reaching, with acute attention to detail and atmosphere in every track, breathing new life into a scene too often concerned with trend. LM1 sets his own pace with Redshift, ignoring the output of others and delivering what he knows best, which in this case is a truly eclectic and engrossing example of contemporary drum & bass.
